Kanada or Canada

Canada !! ....  After spending 7 years in US 2016-2023 ... I get laid off. There are many things to do here , firstly secure your visa status, find a full time job, find some job that will keep me in US. This is the odrer of priority. None of these steps are simple. If a US citizen or GC holder gets laid off they usually take a break, get rejuvenated and start looking for a job. Not the people on Visa. We have to start from Day 1 to find an alternate sponsor to hold our visa.

While doing all this, there is a frantic effort to do activities that will secure the future. One of them is to find a place where it is easy to get PR. Canada the neighbor to north shines brightly as a very attractive option.

I talked to few people who have spent time in Canada and found this pros and cons list.

Pros :

  • Definite timeline to get PR and Citizenship.
  • Canadian passport is valued and easy to travel to countries.
  • Can travel back to US easily
  • English speaking
  • Lot of Indians.
  • We can shift the social security we have built up in US.
Cons
  • Its COLD for 6 months , Someone who is staying in Albert said it is not very cold just -26deg.
  • Not many jobs.
  • Employers prefer PR over Visa holders.
  • Cost of living. It seems rent takes up 50% of earnings in most cities.
  • Earnings are low , lower than 50% of the US earning in USD terms.
  • Healthcare , there are people who say healthcare is free in Canada , but you have to wait 1 year to meet the doctor, What use is a free healthcare that you cannot access.
  • US experience is not relevant , US driving , US working
  • Technologically backward. Monopoly business and largely business crowd

When I read the cons , Our India beats Canada on all the cons. It would be better to just move to India. Where we have family, house and amazing weather. I did not have to wear a jacket even one day in India. I loved the time spent in India 6 weeks were just bliss.

Building the building

We have put a lot of sweat and hard earned money towards constructing our new house, hope we stay there long enough and enjoy our stay as well. It has taken us 2 years to reach this point. I have to write down what I remember. SITE  I remember the first time when Arun told me about site 601. There were 2 sites for sale, one was priced close to 4000 per sqft and another site for 3700, the second site was a dead end site, I was ok with the dead end site. Arun agreed look at the second site itself since it was priced slightly less. This was site 601. One fine Sunday when Dad was visiting us , me Arun and Dad went to see the site. We spoke to the broker, offered him 50rs per sqft if the price was brought down to 3500. That worked, thanks to Dad for that Idea :). Then the process of talking to the owner over phone and securing money for advance started. Since the owner was based in UK much of the conversation happened over email of phone. He agreed to visit us in a couple of week...

Beeing Dad

It took me and dad a couple of days to decide on the birth date. Finally July 15 th 9 AM was chosen as the date. With all this planning destiny had a surprise planned. While I was told to expect a baby boy ( Because of a astrological combination in my horoscope ), doctor Sushma Akka came out and said here is the baby girl :D. It has been a loooooong 9 months. I’m very excited to meet my daughter , I’m looking forward to help her develop as a complete individual. It’s been 5 weeks since our princess was born ( July 15 th ). My patriotic feelings are souring since I have just the documentary on Rajeev Gandhi I wish she can sever our great country in ways that I could not :)
