Canada !! .... After spending 7 years in US 2016-2023 ... I get laid off. There are many things to do here , firstly secure your visa status, find a full time job, find some job that will keep me in US. This is the odrer of priority. None of these steps are simple. If a US citizen or GC holder gets laid off they usually take a break, get rejuvenated and start looking for a job. Not the people on Visa. We have to start from Day 1 to find an alternate sponsor to hold our visa.
While doing all this, there is a frantic effort to do activities that will secure the future. One of them is to find a place where it is easy to get PR. Canada the neighbor to north shines brightly as a very attractive option.
I talked to few people who have spent time in Canada and found this pros and cons list.
Pros :
- Definite timeline to get PR and Citizenship.
- Canadian passport is valued and easy to travel to countries.
- Can travel back to US easily
- English speaking
- Lot of Indians.
- We can shift the social security we have built up in US.
- Its COLD for 6 months , Someone who is staying in Albert said it is not very cold just -26deg.
- Not many jobs.
- Employers prefer PR over Visa holders.
- Cost of living. It seems rent takes up 50% of earnings in most cities.
- Earnings are low , lower than 50% of the US earning in USD terms.
- Healthcare , there are people who say healthcare is free in Canada , but you have to wait 1 year to meet the doctor, What use is a free healthcare that you cannot access.
- US experience is not relevant , US driving , US working
- Technologically backward. Monopoly business and largely business crowd
